Oil Handling and Storage

OSN Oil Analysis:
Analysis of lubricating oils, greases and hydraulic fluids gives a fast and accurate picture of what is happening inside turbines, power generators, gearboxes, compressors, hydraulic systems and other critical machines. It also yields vital information on the condition of the oil itself. Effective monitoring of lube oil allows maintenance to be scheduled efficiently, minimizing the risk of damage to expensive plants and avoiding unscheduled downtime.
Our testing combines the expertise of diagnostic engineers with the latest techniques for analyzing lubricating oils, greases and hydraulic fluids. Both the physical and chemical characteristics of oil are checked, yielding information on the wear of metals and the oil itself.
Our oil analysis lab provides the following testing capabilities:

  • Contamination

  • Analytical Ferrography

  • Particle Counting

  • Viscosity/Viscosity Index

  • Sulfur Content

  • Oxidation/Nitration

  • Total Acid Number (TAN)

  • Total Base Number (TBN)

  • Foaming

  • Flash Point

  • Additives

Other oil analysis services we offer are:
• On-Site Sampling Labor Services
• Oil Analysis Program Evaluation
• Sample Point Identification Survey

We are able to carry out sampling for you, or can provide inexpensive easy-to-use kits. Samples can then be mailed to our laboratory, with routine turnaround within 24 to 48 hours of receipt of the sample. Turnaround time can be reduced for urgent samples.

Our goal is to help you Maximize your equipment Run Time.

Contamination Control
LUBE Oil Contamination accounts for 70 to 80% of most equipment failures and wear problems. The wear process promoted by oil contamination leads to diminished fuel efficiency, reduced useful oil service life, increased equipment down time, reduced component life, loss of equipment performance and an overall increase in operating costs.
Maintaining clean oil is one of the best investments a company can make to keep equipment up and running, yet contamination often remains an overlooked factor behind premature machinery failure and diminished lubricant life. With increases in the cost of oil, greater desire to minimize usage and waste, and a compelling business case for prolonging equipment life, the economic and environmental reason for controlling contamination of lubricants – from the time oil enters a facility until it leaves – is stronger than ever.
That is why OSN Lube Oil Contamination Control Program (LOCCP) is part of proactive maintenance strategy that seeks to minimize the ingress of particulate and other undesirable contaminants, so as to maximize lubricant and machinery life.

The LOCCP adopts the following steps to upgrade your existing lubrication program utilizing modern lubrication technologies by seasoned professionals.

_ Detection
_ Prevention
_ Exclusion and
_ Education

Detection
The first step is often the most rigorous and detailed which encompasses lubricant inspection and testing to help diagnose the internal condition of oil-wetted components and provide valuable information about the lubricant serviceability, level of contamination and what the contamination is.
O-SECUL’S Lube Oil Contamination Control Programme, (LOCCP) is designed to help you critically evaluate an array of equipment information: the application, the industry, the environment of the unit, the particular fluid used, the condition of the lubricant, and a variety of other factors.

Prevention
As nearly all gearboxes, reservoirs and storage tanks are designed to breathe, allowing only clean, dry air to enter the system is at the top of the list of steps to take in preventing ingress of contaminant. Replacing standard breather/filler caps with desiccant breathers immediately prevents moisture and moves particle filtration from 40 micron to 3 micron. O-SECUL offers desiccant breathers which incorporate a drying media with a combination of filters to prohibit the entry of water and microscopic particulates from entering the system. With a large variety of sizes, desiccants, and options there is a breather to fit your need…or we’ll help you make one that does.

Exclusion
Filtration devices should be used to exclude particles and moisture, further preserving the working life of the oil. They are not just a tool for emergency remedial measures when dealing with contaminated lubricants and hydraulic fluids. They should be used in regular, scheduled filtering intervals to help exclude contaminants that have entered the system or were generated within the equipment. O-SECUL provides a wide array of customizable, quality filtration units – on line or off line, that are quickly delivered to you for use in your program.

Education

LOCCP can help you quickly identify the next steps you need to take. Help your team acquire the basics about contamination control, best practices for lubricant storage and handling, lube oil testing and test result evaluation, understand why clean lubricant is important to the machinery health, predict component wears and take proactive actions to avert premature machinery failure and be able to perform cost-benefit analysis to help you in your implementation of best practices. LOCCP incorporates training of your team to know how to apply world class lubrication standards and why they should adopt it in daily operations. A well informed team is an asset to Lube Oil Contamination Control program.

Oil Handling and Storage

Every day maintenance personnel in plants across industry fill or top off systems with new lubricants. Their intention is to positively impact the life and performance of the equipment. Yet, unknowingly they often add mixed, chemically-depleted lubricants containing particulate, chemical and moisture contamination. Poor in-plant storage often lies at the root of these occurrences.

Just like bearings, gears or valves, lubricants should be considered working components in mechanical systems. Just as one would not install a dirty or damaged bearing on a piece of equipment using the wrong tools, “damaged” lubricants should not be added to the machine. The first step toward achieving proactive maintenance of your lubricants, and ultimately your equipment, begins with proper in-plant storage and handling.
OSN Oil Handling & Storage program seeks to protect your lubricants, and ultimately your equipment, from the harmful effects of contamination and lubricant degradation from improper in-plant storage.

OSN has qualified professionals to provide a comprehensive lubricant survey and audit of your facility. A comprehensive, independent lube survey/audit is not only important component of your equipment reliability enhancement program, but can also be a major component in your cost containment.
Our lubricant survey/Audit include
 Lubricant purchasing practices
 Lubricant storage & dispensing practices
 Lubricant management practices and recommendations
 Used lubricant handling practices and recommendation

A final report is presented outlining current practices, recommended practices and estimated annual savings.
